About Green IT Committee

Green IT Committee has succeeded the business that was operated by Green IT Promotion Council (GIPC) for 5 years from 2008 to 2012 and has implemented several services to introduce green IT products (devices, solutions, and services) that would contribute to the improvement of energy efficiency of the whole society.

Specifically, the Committee promotes activities such as discussion on the regulations and the support system regarding the introduction of green IT products, discussion on the potential of energy conservation, international standardization of the energy conservation index of Datacenter, and several public awareness activities in and out of the country.

Activities of Green IT Committee

(1) Examination and introduction promotion regarding the effect of green IT toward the acceleration of energy conservation of the whole society.

In order to accelerate the energy conservation of the whole society, Green IT Committee will strengthen the public awareness activities and work on the government through policy proposals for the purpose of further introducing highly energy conserving IT products (devices, solutions, and services) as well as discussing the potential of energy conservation contribution by green IT.

1) Examination of the potential of energy conservation by green IT

Based on the results of the past examinations regarding the energy conservation of IT device itself and the energy conservation of the society by IT, Green IT Committee will conduct further examination of the potential of energy conservation by IT in the light of the latest technological trends, market data, and the energy supply status, and reflect them in the public awareness activities.

2) Public awareness activities to promote green IT introduction

In order to facilitate the introduction of the highly energy conserving IT products (devices, solutions, and services) into the society, Green IT Committee will actively transmit information through the websites and promote the several public awareness activities through seminars and CEATEC in collaboration with environmental businesses within JEITA.

3) Policy proposal to promote green IT introduction

In order to promote the introduction of the highly energy conserving IT products (devices, solutions, and services) into the society, Green IT Committee will examine the regulations and the support system concerning the relevant field and propose opinions to the concerned agencies and organizations as appropriate.

4) Keeping up on the latest trends in and out of the nation

Green IT Committee will exchange viewpoints with and gather information from the other concerning industries about the potential of energy conservation contribution of IT solution in Japan. Outside Japan, the Committee will gather information about the initiatives of the concerning corporations in each country and the trend of the discussions in the international standardization organizations.

5) Response to international standardization (JTC1 SC39)

In collaboration with domestic committees of JTC1 SC39 (Sustainability for and by Information Technology), Green IT Committee will observe the trend of the discussion of the international standardization concerning green IT and propose Japan’s opinion regarding important issues.。

 

(2) Activities for globalization of green IT

Utilizing the friendly relations established through the past activities with the overseas affiliated organizations mainly in Asia, Green IT Committee will make an appeal of our nation’s superiority in the environmental technology through the events in each country. In addition, the Committee will strengthen information transmission to the emerging countries mainly in Asia for the purpose of creating business opportunity for member companies and try to exercise international leadership.

1)Promotion of partnership with the overseas affiliated organizations and   information transmission

In order to contribute to the global development and progress of green IT, Green IT Committee will strengthen the network with the overseas affiliated organizations or government officials in each country. In particular, the Committee will further deepen the friendship with the affiliated organizations through seminars and events to be held in emerging countries mainly in Asia and make an appeal of our nation’s superiority in the environmental technology. In addition, utilizing the home pages and other media, the Committee will transmit information actively about environmental technology and products for overseas member companies.

2)Support for Asia green IT forum

Green IT Committee will support the forum, in which 11 Asian countries and regions will participate, through the joint initiatives between the public and private sectors and work on the consensus formation for the spread of green IT promotion in Asia.

3)Keeping up on the green IT-related trends

Through the cooperation with the expatriate staff offices, Green IT Committee will keep up on the policy/market trends in Asia and the West. Particularly through hearings with the research corporations and the intellectuals, the Committee will gather information regarding emerging countries in which new business development and the product promotion can be expected in the future.

(3) Consideration of Datacenter energy efficiency metrics and the promotion of international standardization

The Datacenter is an important infrastructure positioned as the core of a smart society and the need for the utilization of it is increasing rapidly, and the center itself is also strongly demanded to reduce the energy consumption (CO2 emission). In response, Green IT Committee will promote the energy efficiency in the Datacenter utilizing DPPE (Datacenter Performance Per Energy: comprehensive evaluation index consisting of energy conservation of facility at the Datacenter, energy productivity of IT devices, and availability of green energy).

Green IT committee will actively lead the discussion of energy efficiency metrics for Datacenter in ISO/IEC JTC1/SC39 (sustainability for and by IT) basing upon the concept of DPPE.
