Overview
Section 1502 (the Conflict Minerals Provision) of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act enacted in July 2010 requires manufacturers and certain other companies listed on the U.S. stock exchanges to file a report on conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and disclose relevant information.
This year is the sixth reporting year since the requirement came into force in 2013.
Additionally, the RMI (Responsible Minerals Initiative, formerly the CFSI) released a pilot Cobalt Reporting Template (CRT) this year. Many of those participating in the briefing session also showed interest in the CRT pilot.
The briefing session featured explanations about why companies engage in the conflict minerals inquiry, how companies should address minerals other than 3TGs such as cobalt for which there are no legal requirements, and the background behind responsible mineral sourcing as well as relevant trends unfolding throughout the world.
Presenters also engaged in individual consultations, as the event proved to be a good opportunity for attendees to gain a deeper understanding of responsible mineral sourcing.
